Els substantius comptables són objectes individuals, persones, llocs, etc. que podem explicar. Podem utilitzar nombres i a/an amb substantius comptables. També tenen la forma en plural.

a magazine
two magazines
an orange
three oranges

Utilitzem la forma singular del verb amb un substantiu comptable en singular:

There is a cup on the table.

Utilitzem la forma plural del verb amb un substantivo comptable en plural:

Those dogs are very noisy, aren’t they?

Els substantius incomptables es refereixen a materials i conceptes que no veiem com a objectes individuals que es puguin explicar.

No podem usar a/an o nombres amb substantius incomptables perquè no tenen la forma en plural.

wool (NOT a wool, two wools)
weather (NOT a weather, two weathers)
information (NOT an information, two informations)

Usem la forma singular del verb amb substantius incomptables, de vegades són un quantitatiu, de vegades no:

There is some butter in the fridge.
This is the equipment we need.

No oblidis que és possible convertir un substantiu incomptable en comptable utilitzant un quantitatiu de mesura o la forma d'envàs. Però recorda que només estem explicant les unitats – és l'única manera per poder mesurar els incomptables.

wine – a big bottle of wine

flour - a small packet of flour

toothpaste – a tube of toothpaste
meat – a pound of meat

butter - a half pound of butter
petrol – a gallon of petrol
sugar - two quilos of sugar

A més, alguns substantius tenen ambdós usos: comptables i incomptables.

She has beautiful xarxa hair (incomptable)
I found two white hairs this morning in my cornflakes! (comptable)
The printer is out of paper (incomptable)
I usually buy three papers (a newspaper – comptable)
